I was a buyer for almost fifteen years in the manufacturing industry – we were taught to always look for and select the supplier who offered the best Quality, Cost, and Delivery. We would send out an average of three bids. The responses had to match apples for apple; the analysis often revealed the lowest bid wasn’t always the best choice. Often times if the lowest was accepted, they would require extra time and energy coaching them, and developing the product to meet the required quality, cost, and on time delivery. After all was said and done, in terms of man hours, the company would have ended up paying more than the original bid.
These selection skills mysteriously transferred over to my personal life. I examined in depth most items I bought, and found I was usually buying at a discount. I would take the time to search until I found the price I wanted to pay, often from an on-line retailer. To this day I hate paying more that what I think an item is worth. That brings me to feminine hygiene products – tampons in particular because I use them. Often. Have used them since I was sixteen. You too? That is five to seven days a month, every month, on- going until Mother Nature determines it is time to stop. Say an average menstrual cycle lasts for thirty years… how many tampon boxes will you buy in a year, twelve minimum right? Let’s do some math: at a minimum of 5 tampons a day (usually more), multiply that by 6 days (5 x 6 = 30), so I use 30 or more tampons per cycle. Love it or hate it, it’s a monthy deal. 30 wands times 12 months – that’s 360 wands a year! Multiply that by 30 years – that’s almost 11,000 wands used in a lifetime!
Not all women use tampons, but since thousands do, and they are massed produced, shouldn’t we benefit by getting the lowest priced product available? Like paying $6 for a box that probably won’t last thru the full cycle? Not so much. We don’t have the manpower (yet 
) to march on the manufacturers and make demands, and of course we can’t sacrifice quality, but we can give them a signal that we want lower prices by buying the discounted, sale items (whether that be tampons, napkins, minipads, etc.) In today’s economy, we all can benefit from reduced spending. Weather you use tampons, pads or some combo of both (like me), increased discounts are usually available if you buy in bulk. This is especially great if there are a few or many women in the household. If not, do you have a close girlfriend, sister or aunt with whom you can share or split? Buy ahead of time and in bulk—never again have to experience that sinking moment “oh no I started, and I don’t have anything on hand.”

Special searches are made for alternative protection ; we’ve found a few brands of protection which offer organic, all-cotton, chlorine-free, sponges, re-usuable cloth pads, and menstrual cups. I have never seen those choices in my neighborhood store.
